A Knack For Niches

Author: Sally Taylor

If you are attempting to establish yourself as an Internet Marketer you are probably finding much information available about getting into your own niche. Everywhere you turn there are niche products for sale. Forums are chocked with posts talking about niche marketing. Throughout all the talk and advertising, though, the key to one mystery for the beginner seems to be missing. How exactly do you choose a niche?

Choosing a niche to develop is not just a matter of seeing a product that you think will make some quick cash for you. You might like the idea of selling Internet security products, but if you know very little about Internet security, those products wont take you very far. To fully develop your business, you are going to need to be an authority on your subject. You will need to communicate with people and write about your subject. People are not likely to want to do business with someone who is clueless about their own business field. Despite what you hear about making money without work and overnight millions being made, the truth is you are going to be putting a lot of work into your business, so you need to choose something that you find interesting enough to keep you motivated as well. If you cant see yourself spending large amounts of time on it dont bother with it, its not for you.

The easiest way to get started in choosing a niche is to make a list of all the things you are both interested in and good at. If you feel that leaves you out, you arent thinking hard enough. I heard a woman moan about being just a housewife and having no real skills once. It was true that she was a homebody who didnt get out much and spent most of her time caring for her home and family, but she had some real talents. This woman could organize a junk yard. There wasnt anywhere you could look that innovative ideas hadnt been used in organizing her closets and cupboards. She was also a master at solving tough cleaning problems. No real skill? I dont think so. Dont ever discredit yourself. You are very good at some things, even if they seem off-the-wall, make sure to list them.

Once you have your list, mark each item in it in order of your preference for it. Now comes the fun part research. First you want to search the Internet and find out what is already being done with your subject. Finding out a niche already has numerous businesses does not necessarily mean you want to give up on it. In fact, it can be proof that your subject is in high demand. What you need to do is take a serious look at what is being offered and what angle you have that will make your business stand out from the herd. What can you offer that is missing? If you know your field well enough, you are sure to find something missing.

Next, you need to think about the ways that you can make money in this niche. Are there products available for you to sell or do you have an original one of your own? Will you need to physically handle or ship products and is that feasible for you? Will the cost of doing business be low enough to allow you some profit? Can you earn from organizing a service that other webmasters in your niche will find beneficial? Are there any forums about the subject, and if so, what are people saying about it? What kind of money and supplies will it take to get up and running in this niche? Can you handle it on your own or do you have a partner that can fill in the areas that you are lacking skill in, such as website building and maintenance?

If you dont see all of the answers to your questions immediately, that doesnt mean giving up. Great ideas dont always just pop up instantly. Go down your list and research each item you have listed just as you did the first. Something very good idea may just jump out at you right away in another subject. If the subject proves to be workable for you, than that is where you will want to start. If you do not see a good way to market a niche, resist the temptation to pick one just to get started quickly. Spending time and money on something that just wont work can quickly become a nightmare. Building new niches will become easier as you gain practice with your first one. So be patient.

Once you have researched all of your subjects, if you still have not found the right niche area for you, the problem may lie in your knowledge of Internet Marketing rather than in the subjects you have chosen. You may just want to do some study or join a group where you can learn more about building businesses on the Net before you attempt to jump into building your own business. Business on the Internet is the same as anything else. You need knowledge and skill to work your trade.

The idea of building businesses and earning staggering income on the Internet has become an overly glamorized idea. The truth is that it takes much learning, work, and time to build a business, so if you are not knocking down millions right away, dont become discouraged. Many of the top earners will admit they did not get there overnight, even if some of their ventures since becoming successful do explode quickly. If you keep your focus and are willing to go through the necessary steps, you will see results if you have chosen your niches with care.
