Weight Loss... The Low Carb Way

Author: Bill Thomas
In the past, I've dabbled around with low carb eating to lose weight, with some success. When you do the induction phase, the weight will come off like clothes at a nudist camp. Of course, you can't or won't continue eating that way, and you'll gradually or quickly add the carbs back into your diet. In fact, you're supposed to do this by adding fruit, and other 'good' carbs, and by good carbs we're not talking pizza, pasta, beer, cake, etc.

What I've found from a couple of prior experiences with this kind of eating is, one, if you're living with someone who is not doing the low carb thing, and he/she has all the regular stuff around the house, you're more likely to fall away from the low carb way of eating when a nice piece of cheesecake is sitting there in the refrigerator with your name on it. Other than being a super disciplined sort of person, I believe that to really make it work, both people have to be involved in the process.

Second, you have to have a good amount of variety. The first time I tried it I did the eggs, meat, fish, cheese, salads, with basic variations, and it soon became boring and hard to stick with. The next time I did a bit more reading, and introduced more foods but again it was easy to fall off the wagon when going out to eat, and finding it very easy to order my favorite Italian dish instead of a meat and salad. Finding suitable meals at restaurants is another thing that you should be prepared to do. More places are becoming aware of low carb ways of cooking, and are catering to people who eat this way.

About a year later, I am again eating low carb and hoping the third time is a charm. What I've done differently this time other than introducing more variety is, I altered the induction phase so that I never had to go on a total elimination of carbs. I've been eating fruit and salads right from the beginning. I have eliminated bread, pasta, sweets(for the most part) all the things that you definitely need to stay away from to make this way of eating work. Let me add one other thing; it is true that once you stop eating loads of carbs, you craving for them really does diminish. I've always loved pasta, could eat it 3 times a week, and it's amazing to me that I no longer crave this. In fact, I was able to fix this for a couple of friends and not indulge myself!

Lastly, I've been doing this for almost two months now, and when I started out my goal was to lose 20 pounds, which I have increased to 25. As of last week, I had lost 17lbs. and on target to lose at lease 20 pounds by the end of August. I decided to use a different approach and decide that one pound a week is enough, therefore not setting myself up for unreasonable expectations.

Weight loss is something that most of us deal with at some time in our life. A lot of us have lost weight only to put it back on over a period of time. I believe a low carb approach along with increased activity is the best chance most of us have to take and keep it off.
